salsbergWith just two events left before the start of WPT Champions Week, Matt Salsberg has opened up a slight lead over Paul Volpe in the Season XI WPT Player of the Year race.

Salsberg and Volpe were tied for the lead in this year’s POY race when the WPT Seminole Hard Rock Showdown started, and both players again made deep runs in the 542-entrant tournament. Volpe busted the tournament in 27th position, which was good for nearly $16,600 and 50 WPT POY points. Salsberg, meanwhile, lasted until 13th place, picking up 100 points and nearly $23,000 in cash.

When the WPT bestbet Open starts in Jacksonville, Florida on April 26, Salsberg will be nursing a small, 100-point lead over Volpe. And, while both players are at least 600 points ahead of Paul Klann who currently sits in third position, there’s still plenty of time for a dark horse to make a late charge for the lead before the season’s end, so stay tuned for what promises to be one of the most thrilling finishes in WPT history.
