In the early hours of Monday, November, 5, David Quang was crowned the Season V WPTDeepStacks Montreal champion after he came through an 896 player field to win the C$222,000 first-place prize.

The $1,500 + $150 WPTDeepStacks came with a C$1,000,000 guaranteed prize pool and kicked off with Day 1a at the Playground Poker Club on Thursday, November, 1 with four more starting flights taking place throughout three days, followed by Day 2 on Saturday, November, 3.

The final day’s action resumed on Sunday, November, 4 with 31 players all still with the top prize in their sights, with Quang second in chips only to Muhammad Abdel-Rahim.

WPT Champions Club member Tony Tran was looking to become the first player in WPT history to win both a Main Tour and WPTDeepStacks title, after his victory in the WPT bestbet Bounty Scramble for $341,486 less than three weeks ago. But Tran’s hopes came to an end when he departed in 23rd place for $8,150.

Start-of-day chipleader Abdel-Rahim departed in 11th place for C$17,800 before Eric Vallee’s departure in 10th place for C$22,300 set up the final table of nine.

WPTDeepStacks Montreal Final Table Results
1st: David Quang – C$222,000 + US$3,000 WPT Event Package
2nd: Daniel Dubeau – C$150,000
3rd: Rich Alsup – C$110,000
4th: Omid Shahbazian – C$82,480
5th: Said El-Yousfi – C$62,300
6th: Giancarlo Palleschi – C$47,300
7th: Timothy Ulmer – C$36,300
8th: Alexander Wong- C$28,300
9th: Balakrish Patur – C$22,300

The final table was a tight affair with the chipleader Rich Alsup on 4.3 million and the short stack Alexander Wong sat with 1.4 million, meaning just one hand could potentially change the whole table dynamics.

Patur, Wong, and Ulmer were the first three players to depart before Palleschi and El-Yousfi exited in sixth and fifth place respectively. The play then went four-handed for over two hours before Shahbazian’s departure in fourth place paved the way for the final three of Alsup, Dubeau, and Quang.

Alsup then departed with the bronze medal after a series of double ups could not help his king-ten lose to Quang’s king-nine after the board fell nine-eight-deuce-nine-ace to give Quang trips.

And after nearly 14 hours of play on the final day, Dubeau ultimately succumbed to the pressure from Quang and the final hand saw Quang’s ace-king hold up against Dubeau’s queen-four suited after all the chips went into the middle preflop.

Quang had gone the distanceĀ and picked up the C$222,000 first place prize as well as a US$3,000 WPT Main Tour package.
