Catching up with WPT Commentator Mike Sexton

WPT Commentator Mike Sexton (pictured) is making a deep run on Day 4 at the WPT L.A. Poker Classic. He won the WPT Montreal Main Event back in November to win his first WPT title in dramatic fashion, and if he makes it two titles here at Commerce Casino, Sexton will be just 100 points behind current Hublot WPT Player of the Year points leader Benjamin Zamani. Sexton has 1,216,000 in chips at the last break tonight, when we caught up with him for a quick update about his day.

WPT: How has your day gone so far?

Sexton: “I went from second in chips to probably in the bottom 10 in chips by the third hand of the day or something. And then I built it back up. I got lucky twice, I picked up aces twice and got action twice. Once all in preflop when I was short-stacked, the guy had two tens and it stood up. And I just had aces against kings to win a 1.2 million pot. Aces have been good to me, and they have come at the right time to get action and they hold up.”

WPT: Do you think you can make another final table run?

Sexton: “Hopefully, if I don’t shipwreck again [laughs]. But right now I’m feeling pretty good. I’ve just been lucky to get involved with two coolers where I had aces and I got to go in for all my money.”

WPT: What do you think of the structure at the WPT L.A. Poker Classic?

Sexton: “The structure of the LAPC is fantastic. Hour limits the first day, then an hour-and-a-half, and now we’re playing two hour levels. As a player you can’t ask for more.”
