Paris is a city that hardly needs an introduction. One of the most renowned and well-visited capitals in the world, you are likely familiar with its nickname already: “The city of love.” Yet the romantic setting and beautiful architecture are not all that the city has to offer…
For those who dare to stray off the path, there is a huge amount to see and do. Below, WPT.com has compiled a list of five alternative sightseeing spots that give a glimpse into a side of the French capital you never knew existed.
The Petite Ceinture railway
Prior to the Metro system, over 150 years ago, the “little belt” railway was built. Circling the city over a total of 30 kilometres (19 miles), the line has long since been abandoned for its original use but in recent years, sections have been re-opened to the public.
Some sections of the line are open as nature trails and several original stations are open to the public now too. It is also possible to walk through a few of the tunnels but, whatever you do: Don’t forget to take a flashlight with you!
View the City from Above
A lesser-known Paris fact: it is home to the largest hot air balloon in the world. And that hot air balloon can be found in Parc André-Citroen. The balloon takes visitors up to an altitude of 150 metres, giving them a rarely seen birds-eye view of the city.
Fast Food
The Bustronome, is the perfect solution for those who have little time to explore. The tour bus with a difference has a fully functional restaurant onboard and a glass roof to boot. This means patrons can enjoy delicious food (all six courses of it) whilst taking in some of Paris’ most famous sights. The tour lasts two and a half hours and comes complete with an audio guide.
Le Bel Canto
Bel Canto is no ordinary restaurant. The waiters and waitresses are all trained opera singers and pianists and will perform whilst serving dinner. Perfect for those who are short on time or for those who like to try something different.
Climb the Montparnasse Tower
A trip to the Eiffel Tower is an absolute must, but there is one problem with climbing the tower – it is impossible to see it when you’re inside it. The Montparnasse Tower is one of the few skyscrapers in the city and is perfectly positioned to see the full grandeur of France’s most famous tower whether seeing it in natural light or lit up after the sun has gone down.
