Caroline Schallock Doesn't See the Chop Until After She Mucks a Card; Marc Sen Receives a Gift of Nearly 1.6 Million

Sep 8, 2024

Marc Sen raises under the gun to 250,000, and Caroline Schallock calls from the big blind.

The flop comes Diamond 8Club 8Club 7, Schallock checks, Sen bets 150,000, and Schallock calls.

The turn card is the Diamond Q, Schallock checks, Sen bets about 425,000, and Schallock calls.

The river card is the Diamond A, Schallock checks, Sen bets 650,000, and Schallock uses a Time Chip to tank for nearly a minute before she calls.

Sen shows Spade KClub Q for two pair, queens and eights with an ace kicker. Schallock shows one card — the Heart Q — and mucks the other card. The pot worth about 3,150,000 is awarded to Sen.

A few seconds later, Schallock realizes her error — no matter what her other card was, she would at least have an identical hand to chop the pot. But the dealer reminds her that her other card has already been mixed into the muck, and her fold is final.

For additional context, this happened around 1:30 am, and these players started their day 13 1/2 hours ago. It’s been a long day, and the night will likely last at least another two hours.

Schallock accepts her mental error without an argument, though it clearly pains her to have lost about 1,575,000 in chips — the same amount she is left with after the hand, so that was half her stack.

Marc Sen  –  6,100,000  (49 bb)
Caroline Schallock  –  1,575,000  (13 bb)
