Daiane Mendes into Seven Figures

Nov 9, 2014

The board shows [Jd8s5s6s] when Jay Romano checks in a heads-up pot. Daiane Mendes is the lady across the table, and she puts out a bet of 60,000. Romano check-raises all in for a total of 289,000, and Mendes sinks deep into her chair and deep into the tank.

She is visibly distraught at the decision, and she stares back at her cards as she ponders. Finally, she announces the call.

Romano: [Ks7s]
Mendes: [6c6h]

"Oh, flush!" Mendes laments as she tables her inferior set of sixes, but the hand is not over.

"Fade it out," Romano pleads. The dealer does not oblige him.

River: [Jc]

The board pairs, and Mendes lets out a shriek of joy as she sees her now-superior full house. Romano shrugs and frowns, then heads to the payout desk to collect his winnings.

Mendes is still in disbelief, hugging and high-fiving everyone within arm’s reach.

When Romano is out of earshot, her neighbor Justin Zaki turns to Mendes:

"I was so sure the board was going to pair," he says. "I saw your hand when you were thinking, and I knew it was tapioca pudding for that guy."

Mendes is now well over the million-chip mark, likely closer to 1.1 million, though she’s not yet finished stacking that big pot.
