Johan Strijbis Leads WPTDeepStacks Amsterdam Day 1A

May 5, 2017

Johan Strijbis

With 105 players entering WPTDeepstacks Amsterdam Day 1A there was bound to be some action at the tables, as the WPT Europe Tour kicked off in style at the Holland Casino, Amsterdam.

There were a whole bunch of Dutch players in the field, including EPT champions Noah Boeken and Peter de Korver. Also in the field was 2016 Monster WPT Tournament of Champions winner Farid Yachou, who fired two bullets but failed to reach Day 2. He may still be back tomorrow, as this tournament allows unlimited re-entries.

The final 43 players are led by Johann Strijbis (pictured above) with 168,700. Strijbis scooped a monster pot in Level 9 when he turned a full house against Ryanne van der Wiele and Kees van Brugge. Van Brugge folded a full house of his own on the river, but it was already enough for Strijbis to soar up the chip counts, a position in which he stayed for the rest of the day.

A bunch of familiar names will be joining Strijbis in Day 2, including Van der Wiele (86,900). They include WSOP APAC Champion Scott Davies (37,500), Aydin Fatih (80,600), Dennis Bijen (40,200) and 2016 Master Classics of Poker Main Event winner Hakim Zoufri (39,900). The other big stacks include Rens Pleijster (132,400), Dennis Berglin (142,200), Linda van de Ree (124,300).

Players have the chance of playing Day 1B and then carrying forward their best stack. One of them might be Juha Helppi who bagged up just 800 chips. According to our Dutch colleagues, he told tournament staff that he: “Doesn’t want to see those 800 chips on Day 2.”
